# Why Does the Sky Look Washed Out or White in My Photos?

You remember the sky being rich blue, the clouds having shape, and the whole scene looking alive. Then you open the photograph, and the sky is pale, washed out, or almost completely white. It is a common exposure problem in photography, and it usually has less to do with the sky than with what your camera was trying to expose correctly.

Your camera can record only a limited range between dark shadows and bright highlights. This is called **dynamic range**. When you photograph a person, building, landscape, or animal that is much darker than the sky, the camera may brighten the exposure for your subject. The problem is that the sky was already bright. Give it too much exposure and the brightest tones begin losing color and detail. Push it too far, and blue becomes white.

That is why an **overexposed or washed-out sky in photos** is often an exposure problem, not a color problem.

Before taking the picture, look beyond your subject and pay attention to the brightest areas of the frame. In **Aperture Priority** or another automatic exposure mode, try using **negative exposure compensation**. Start with minus one third or minus two thirds of a stop. Sometimes that small adjustment is enough to bring blue sky and cloud detail back without making your subject too dark.

Your **histogram** can help too. You do not need to become obsessed with reading graphs. If the information is pushed against the right edge, you may be clipping highlights. Many cameras also offer a highlight warning that flashes over areas that have become too bright. Those tools can reveal something the image on the back of the camera may not.

If you shoot RAW, you usually have more latitude to recover an overexposed sky during editing. Lowering Highlights, Whites, or Exposure can reveal a lot of detail. But there is an important limit. RAW cannot recover information the camera never recorded. Once an area is completely clipped to white, there may be no blue sky hiding underneath it.

Another reason skies sometimes look pale is atmospheric haze and the direction of the light. Photographing toward the sun can reduce contrast and color in the sky. Moving so the sun is more to the side or behind you can produce a deeper blue without changing a camera setting.

A circular polarizing filter can deepen blue skies and reduce atmospheric glare too, especially when photographing roughly 90 degrees from the sun. Just be careful with very wide-angle lenses because polarization can become uneven across a large sky.

Sometimes the correct answer is simply that the sky was bright and featureless. You can't turn an overcast white sky into a deep blue one without replacing it or altering it. So when your sky looks white or washed out, do not immediately reach for the saturation slider. First ask whether you protected the highlights. **Good sky color begins with good exposure.**

That small habit can completely change how your outdoor photographs look.
