About Camera Dates
Camera Dates is an independent photography publication created by Jonathan Charles and launched in January 2026. It was built around a simple belief: photography education should help people become better photographers without constantly trying to sell them something.
Camera Dates is photography education built on abundance, not upsells.
You do not need the newest camera. I hope you will use what you already have. You do not need the most expensive lens. You do not need to turn photography into a business or spend every spare dollar chasing gear.
You need time, curiosity, practice, and a reason to go make photographs.
That is what Camera Dates is here to provide.

Camera Dates is for beginners, experienced photographers, hobbyists, travelers, parents, artists, and anyone else who wants to see the world a little differently.
You will find honest photography articles, practical lessons, creative exercises, Camera Date challenges, field guides, thoughtful critiques, and encouragement to use the camera you already own, whatever it is.
The goal is not to fill your head with complicated rules or convince you that better equipment will solve everything.
The goal is to help you slow down, notice more, understand your choices, and make photographs that mean something to you.
What Is a Camera Date?
A Camera Date is dedicated time spent making photographs with purpose.
It might be a quiet walk through your neighborhood, an afternoon photographing your family, a morning at a local park, or ten focused minutes in your own backyard.
The location does not have to be dramatic. The camera does not have to be expensive. The photograph does not have to impress the internet.
The point is to practice seeing, create with intention, and enjoy photography again.

Jonathan Charles is a photographer, writer, and the creator of Camera Dates.
After years of photographing, learning, experimenting, and collecting more ideas than any reasonable person should, he created Camera Dates as a place to share photography education in a more practical and honest way. Camera Dates exists because he doesn't believe any of this is a trade secret worth gatekeeping, and he'd rather hand over everything he knows than protect it. He figures that's how you find the people who love photography as much as he does.
His work focuses on helping photographers move beyond settings and equipment so they can better understand composition, intention, light, and storytelling, and the reasons photographs matter in the first place. Camera Dates is also where future photography books, field guides, and creative challenges are taking shape.
